Advanced Multimedia Storytelling from the Storyboard to the Published Essay
“Photojournalism is the process of collecting visual information and disseminating that information with a layer of contextualization.” -Siggraph 2008
Photojournalism with multimedia storytelling empowers the photographs with in-depth audio recording, ambient noise recorded from the field or existing sound sources, and video segments to enhance the language of In Motion. In some cases, motion graphics and technical drawings will be used in the form of a visual magazine to add text and chart elements.
Still and DV cameras paired with a computer offer an autonomous and affordable workflow to reporters/artists willing to edit and publish a story online with no external assistance. The focus of Magnum In Motion instructors will be to offer young photographers willing to publish a story with trust, autonomy, low cost, and eventually from remote locations, to be empowered and self-sufficient in that process.
The purpose of this workshop therefore is to challenge each participant to build a story, using an existing body of work, and a computer equipped with Final Cut Pro within a five-day timeframe.
Magnum photographers will lead sessions by giving tips and feedback on how to build a multimedia essay from images and sounds taken from the field. In addition, multimedia and web professionals will come in daily for readings and Q & A sessions about specific topics related to sound recording, asset management, and online dissemination.
The final goal of this workshop is to improve your technical and narrative skills, while acknowledging that beyond technologies and each one’s intention, storytelling is about finding a storyline, a narrative development, a pace for the ensemble, and at its very best the emotional charge to compel the viewer to empathize with the subject matter.
LEVEL/ Intermediate to advanced
