Internships are available at each of the Magnum offices and provide participants the unique opportunity to gain insight into the workings of the photographic cooperative and the industry as a whole. Please contact the office closest to you for details on available internships.

 



Positions Available at Magnum New York ONLY:

Please use the form on the right to submit the following application materials: your resume, a brief letter explaining why you wish to intern at Magnum and in which department you wish to work, and one letter of recommendation. Please clearly state which position and internship session you are applying for.

 

Applications that do not meet all requirements will not be considered. All applicants must be available for an in-person or telephone interview. All internships are unpaid. University credit possible. Absolutely no phone calls.

 

Applications must be sent at least one month prior to start date to be considered for that session.

 

Archive Department Interns

Responsibilities:

• Assist in maintaining Magnum’s digital and analog image archive
• Photo researching and filing
• Related administrative duties that may change daily
• Running errands (transporting film, prints, negatives)

Requirements:

• Applicant must hold or be in the process of earning a degree in photography or library science
• Familiarity with PC platform and Excel.
• Must be comfortable creating and working with spreadsheets
• Must have basic Photoshop skills
• Ability to organize and multi-task

Contract: 2 days per week, 3 months

Internship sessions: January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December

Magnum In Motion Interns

Multimedia Producer:

Responsibilities:

• Produce multimedia stories from beginning to end, from photographer's brief to final posting on Magnum In Motion and various web platforms
• Assist MIM team in research, pre-production (transcribing interviews, preparing assets) and post-production (video exports, flash conversions)
• Perform daily administrative tasks

Requirements:

• Fluent and talented in Final Cut Pro, familiar with web posting and video formatting. Skills in the following fields/programs are a plus: digital imaging: Photoshop; sound design: pro tools and/or soundtrack pro; motion design: motion, after effects
• Great visual vocabulary and skills in picture editing
• Discipline in archiving, editing, timing, and publishing with quality control
• Must be self-reliant, extremely disciplined to meet strict deadlines with an excellent sense of quality control

Contract: 5 days a week, 3 to 6 months

Internship sessions: January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December

Print Sales Department Interns

Responsibilities:

• Handle fine photographs of all print types
• Update and maintain inventory database for modern and vintage prints in the New York archive
• Contact galleries, photographers, assistants, and other print sales teams in Magnum offices for departmental administration
• Perform image and online research

Requirements:

• Must speak English fluently. French is helpful
• Ability to multitask. Applicant must have superior organizational skills and sense of responsibility
• Proficiency with both Mac and PC preferred
• Must be proficient with Excel
• Experience with Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat preferred
• Must have excellent communication and writing skills
• Must have knowledge of various photographic print types and terminology
• Design experience a plus

Contract: 2-4 days per week, 6 months

Internship sessions: January-June, July-December

Exhibitions Department Intern

Responsibilities:

• Preparing information for Magnum website
• Preparing checklists and condition reports
• Packing prints and registration
• Conducting research projects on museums, festivals, and of the Magnum archive

Requirements:

• Fast learner with strong attention to detail
• Comfortable with both PC and Mac environments
• One to two years in gallery setting, registrarial training, or arts administration background
• Must know Adobe software, InDesign is a plus
• Familiarity with history of photography

Contract: 2 days per week minimum, 6 month session

Internship sessions: January-June, July-December
